Esty Corrects Health Care Paperwork Error that Cost Wolcott Resident Thousands

Virginia Sehnal Hanson connected with Esty after realizing an error had occurred in generating her health care premiums — Access Health CT had not used her total income amount to calculate the premium, and only considered her gross annual income, forgetting to include her supplemental income. When it came time to file her taxes and claim her returns, the IRS informed her she had underpaid, leaving her with thousands of dollars in fees and penalties.

Once Hanson understood the mistake that Access Health CT had made, she began her attempts to rectify the situation, though she was not having much luck on her own. Frustrated with costly error and unsure of how to appeal the costs charged to her, Hanson contacted Esty to assist her in connecting with the IRS to file a penalty abatement. Working with Access Health CT, Esty had Hanson’s income modified to reflect her true salary, and a fair premium cost.

“I am very pleased with the help I received from Rep. Esty and her staff in the office. Rep. Esty helped me resolve an issue with the IRS and my health care,” Hanson said. “She provided me with the information and contacts I needed in a very timely manner, and I was able to get the correct information I needed for my very particular issue with the IRS. With Rep. Esty’s help, we were able to resolve my issue. I really appreciated her assistance. This part of my situation was a pleasant experience.”

“This was an unfortunate mistake, and potentially a costly one for Virginia if it wasn't fixed. Clerical errors should not come with financial burdens forced upon unsuspecting citizens. When it comes to tax penalties and health care, people like Virginia deserve the opportunity to present their case and get mistakes immediately corrected," Esty said. “I am pleased we were able to help Virginia resolve this problem and put this headache behind her."

Residents in central and northwest Connecticut who are having difficulty with their taxes, the IRS, or health care are encouraged to call Esty’s office at 860-223-8412.
