Esty Secures Overdue Social Security Payments for Mother and Son in Plymouth
July 18, 2016

Gonzales and her attorney contacted Esty after waiting nearly a year for supplemental security income (SSI) for Tyler, who is disabled. A U.S. District Court ordered the calculation and payment of SSI benefits to the family, and the Social Security Administration (SSA) provided notice of past-due benefits for $33,256.
For over a year, Gonzales and her attorney tried to work with SSA to retrieve Tyler’s benefits. Unsure how to proceed, they reached out to Esty and explained the situation and their frustration about the long delays in service.
By working with SSA officials, Esty secured Gonzalez’s full SSI payments .
"In February of 2015 a federal judge ordered SSA to pay SSI benefits to my child who has a disability. A year later, SSA still had not paid any retroactive benefits to me as his mother and representative payee,” Gonzalez said. “Only after my attorney's request for intervention by Rep. Esty’s office in March of 2016 were these payments finally started, and only after continued follow-up by her office for two additional months was a routine fee paid to my attorney. I thank Rep. Esty and her staff for their help cutting through the bureaucracy.”
“Parents shouldn’t have to put up with the endless bureaucracy that Malvia endured to receive the basic benefits they need to look after their kids,” Esty said. “I’m pleased to see a positive outcome for Malvia and Tyler, and I’m relieved they will now be able to move on from this ordeal.”
Residents in central and northwest Connecticut who are having difficulty receiving their social security or Medicare benefits, or are small business owners facing obstacles with federal agencies, are encouraged to call Esty’s office at 860-223-8412.
