Robert McFarland of Brookfield is a student at Western Connecticut State University and U.S. Army Reserve veteran. Robert was awarded a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) education benefit that provides educational assistance to individuals who served on active duty after 9/11.
After three semesters, the VA rescinded their decision to give Robert the benefit and retroactively held him responsible for nearly $27,000. The VA also seized Robert’s tax refund to help offset the debt. Robert, unable to pay the balance and under the stress of final exams, reached out to my office for help. My staff contacted the VA, who confirmed that a mistake was made. The VA cleared the debt, and returned Robert’s tax refund.
“Thank you for all your help. You greatly assisted with solving my complex VA issue for a favorable outcome.”
