Esty Calls for Bipartisan Tax Reform

September 27, 2017
Press Release
Esty: “For the sake of families and small businesses in Connecticut, we need a better approach”

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) today issued the following statement following the release of the Republican tax plan:

“We need tax policies that are fair, grow our economy, and support working families. The federal government should make it easier for businesses to do business. And for the sake of families and small businesses in Connecticut, we need a better approach that benefits all Americans, regardless of wealth, and brings predictability to working families and businesses across Connecticut.

“The proposal put out today would provide tax cuts for the wealthy at the expense of middle class, working Americans. Not only that, it is fiscally irresponsible. This plan would contribute at least $3 trillion over the next ten years to the federal budget deficit, while gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security—programs that are vital to lifting folks out of poverty. Should this go forward, it would take away funding from critical long-term investments, such as education, infrastructure, and job-training programs.

“I have heard time and time again from businesses and industry leaders across central and northwestern Connecticut the importance and necessity of tax reform and a predictable, stable, and simplified tax code in order to grow jobs, attract innovators, and compete in a global economy. I am calling on my colleagues to come together – Democrats and Republicans - to get this done.”
