Women Peer Counselors Make Up Only 16% Of VA Peer Support Program
United States Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) today introduced the Women Veterans Peer Counseling Enhancement Act to ensure the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Peer Support Program is equipped with an adequate amount of peer counselors to help address the mental health needs of women veterans. Representatives Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) and Elizabeth Esty (D-Conn.) originally introduced the companion legislation in the House of Representatives on December 13, 2017.

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-05) called for the establishment of a $25 billion federal opioid epidemic response fund this morning, as advocates for addiction treatment continue to call for the expansion of federal resources to combat the rising number of opioid-related deaths around the country. Despite the Trump Administration’s announcement declaring the opioid crisis a national public health emergency in late October, no new federal resources have been earmarked for the crisis and key positions – including the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration – remain unfilled.
