Esty on Senate CBO Score: ‘Pull This Bill’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) today released the following statement regarding the Congressional Budget Office’s analysis of the Senate GOP proposal to pay for millions of dollars in tax cuts for the wealthy by depriving 22 million American of health coverage:
“This CBO report confirms the reality of the Senate GOP’s secret legislation. This bill is cruel. It will hurt Americans.
“This bill is not health care reform. It is a massive tax cut for the wealthiest Americans, paid for by making millions of working families pay more money for less health coverage. When the folks I represent in Connecticut talk about changes they need in our health care system, they talk about lowering premiums and deductibles, reducing drug prices, and expanding options for care. It could not be plainer that the bill before us doesn’t serve the American people.
“I continue to work toward reasonable solutions to improve our health care system, and I stand ready to work with the President, my colleagues, and most importantly the American people to hammer out a path forward. But one party negotiating against itself behind closed doors – shutting out the public – is not the way to serve the families we are sent here to represent. The only responsible course of action is to pull the Senate bill from consideration. We should start fresh on a bipartisan plan that truly brings us closer to our shared goal of quality, affordable health care for every American.”
