Esty Statement on the Anniversary of September 11
WASHINGTON, DC – Following commemoration services at the U.S. Capitol, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty released the following statement on the 12th anniversary of the September 11, 2011 terrorist attacks.
“Today, as we are mourn the loss of our fellow Americans and remember the immense tragedy we experienced 12 years ago, we also recognize and honor the very best of our country. On September 11, 2001 we witnessed examples of the strength and resolve that define us as a people. We honor all of the courageous first responders, firefighters, police officers, and volunteers who were on the scene on that day and the days that followed, including many who gave their lives to save others. And we honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to our country over 12 years of war since that dark day – including Staff Sgt. Todd Lobraico of New Fairfield, who was tragically killed in action in Afghanistan just last week.
“Today, we keep the families who lost loved ones on that day and since in our thoughts and our prayers. Let us always be thankful for the service of our brave military men and women, our firefighters, police officers, and first responders. Let us never forget our debts to them. Let us stand together, resolved not only to honor their sacrifice, but to ensure we are meeting our obligations to support and help all who have given so much to our country.”
Esty also urges Connecticut residents who may be eligible for claims with the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF) to register before the upcoming October 3, 2013 deadline. Passed as part of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act in 2010, the VCF compensates 9/11 responders and survivors for economic losses due to physical injuries sustained in the attacks and the subsequent recovery efforts. More information on how to register and file a claim can be found at www.vcf.gov.
