Esty Statement on Confirmation that FBI Investigation Includes Probe of Trump Associates
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) today issued the following statement regarding FBI Director James B. Comey’s testimony before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which confirmed that the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election includes an examination of possible ties between Trump campaign associates and the Russian government and also confirmed that no known evidence exists to support President Trump’s claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower:
“Director Comey’s testimony confirmed that the many unanswered questions about ties between President Trump’s associates and the Russian government are serious enough that they are the subject of an FBI counterintelligence investigation. The frequency of meetings between Trump associates and Russian officials is made all the more alarming by the fact that a significant number of high-ranking individuals within the Trump campaign and the U.S. government – including the newly confirmed Attorney General and recently resigned former White House National Security Adviser – failed to disclose the conversations.
“It is a fact that Russia has embarked on a campaign to weaken the United States and undermine our democracy. The American people deserve to know the full scope of Russia’s activities and whether any American individuals – including those who are serving or have served in the Trump administration as well as those who were involved in President Trump’s campaign – were aware of or in any way involved in those activities. Today’s revelations make clearer than ever the need for a nonpartisan, independent investigation into these matters. It is the best way to assure public confidence in the integrity of this investigation into foreign efforts to influence our election.
“Meanwhile, Director Comey’s testimony today confirmed that President Trump’s wiretapping claim is wholly unsubstantiated. President Trump’s baseless accusation of criminal activity by his predecessor is beneath the dignity of the Presidency. These repeated, unfounded assertions will do irreparable harm to President Trump’s credibility. He needs to acknowledge to the public that his claim was false.”
