Esty Statement on Joel Colindres

January 29, 2018
Press Release
Colindres, father of two, scheduled to be deported on Wednesday

NEW FAIRFIELD, CT – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-05) released the following statement urging support for the family of Joel Colindres, a New Fairfield man scheduled for deportation on Wednesday afternoon:

“Last week, I had the opportunity to meet again with Joel and Samantha Colindres as they deal with the immense strain of their uncertain future,” Esty said. “In the months that I’ve gotten to know the Colindres family, I’ve been struck time and again by just how much our country needs more people like them right now. Joel is hardworking, kind, and devoted to his family and to our country. He pays his taxes, coaches the local children in soccer, and tells everyone he meets what a great and good country America is. Samantha is a loving mother who’s shown unimaginable strength in the face of incredible adversity. Our federal government’s resources should not be used to tear good people like Joel from their families.

“The Colindres family has requested respect for their privacy in the last few days before Joel’s potential departure, and I ask everyone to respect their wishes. But I want them to know this: Connecticut stands with you. We stand with you, we embrace you, and we will continue to help you in every way we can.”
