Esty Votes Against FAA Reauthorization Over Air Traffic Control Privatization
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5), the Vice Ranking Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, today voted against H.R. 299, the 21st Century Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization (AIRR) Act, during the Committee’s mark-up of the legislation.
“If we took Air Traffic Control privatization out of this reauthorization, it would sail through the House with broad support from both parties,” Esty said. “The bill includes important bipartisan reforms to strengthen consumer protections, make air travel safer, and improve accessibility for Americans with disabilities. But these positive developments can’t make up for the fact that ATC privatization would put public safety at risk and threaten the availability of affordable air travel.
“I urge my Republican colleagues not to deep-six the many good things we have worked to achieve in this long-overdue legislation in pursuit of a privatization plan that Congress has repeatedly, and rightly, rejected.”
